"About questions, shames and scars"
2020 - 20min.
Rio de Janeiro, Brasil
Brazil Hijacked invites us to think about Brazil, that surreal, sad and complex behemoth, while forcing us to strip bare and face the twists and distortions in our history. The work emerged from their thoughts on the relations within a group with a director and dancers that come from very different social and cultural backgrounds and who reflect a Brazil of enormous inequalities. While showing their performance aCORdo they talk about their work and how their lives have been affected by Bolsonaro’s fascist politics, COVID-19 , and others.

Created in 2009, cía. REC is a potent hub of ‘Carioca’ contemporary dance artists formed by Alice Ripoll, Alan Ferreira, Leandro Coala, Tony Hewerton, Luiz LA, and Rômulo Galvão. The company first emerged in 2007 from the classes that Alice ran at an NGO in the favela of Chácara do Céu in Rio de Janeiro, which were attended by a group of young hip-hop dancers who would later developed an interest in contemporary dance. Once the classes ceased, the group decided to carry on, without any outside support, at the church in their favela. Today, they present their work at the best dance festivals all over the world.
